This is week 16 of the CSA – that means we’ve been at this for about four months! We did skip a week because of Independence Day, but still. Four months! Awesome.
Last week’s share didn’t get documented, mostly because of laziness (yes, it happens). However, I will tell you – we got corn! I froze the niblets for winter. We also got an acorn squash, some seckel pears, and it was the second week of tomato shares.
I ordered another 25 pound box of plum tomatoes, which I think were actually romas. I used part of that tomato share for my tomato dehydrating project. I used the rest to can crushed tomatoes – 11 pints! I can imagine a tasty winter soup of tomatoes, corn, peppers, and chicken, made with my delicious and nourishing chicken bone broth.
Anyway, this week we got:
1 bunch tsa tsai
1 pint mini tomatoes (yellow mini romas!)
2 pounds eggplant
1 bunch radishes (French Breakfast for me)
1 pound green beans
2 pounds concord grapes
1 pound nectarines
2 pounds bartlett pears
2 pound macoun apples
Last time we had concord grapes (a few weeks ago) I made pickled grapes and they were dreadful. I gagged when I tasted them, and had to dump them; I won’t be making them again. Perhaps I’ll just make grape juice out of the ones I don’t eat out of hand.
Tomorrow I’ll (hopefully) make pesto from the radish tops. Radishes themselves will be for sandwiches – sprouted wheat bread spread with pasture butter, topped with sliced radishes and fleur de sel. Mmm…
I’m so impressed that nectarines are still available! I will eat them out of hand, or over yogurt. The last tastes of summer fruit…
The apples seem fabulous, too. Our fruit farmer grows some amazing apples.
Happy Fall eating!
